LSU was one of the top ten football programs of the last century.

Over the past few decades, LSU has been one of the most notable football programs. However, covering the past century is much more challenging.

Prior to the current state of LSU football and how it is perceived, there was a lot of success for the Tigers. However, the majority of their success has occurred in the last 20 years.

To interpret which projects rank where, the Kelley Portage evaluations framework was utilized. Based on the teams that compete at the highest level year after year and win at a high level during that time, the Kelley Ford ratings scale assigns programs a score between 0 and 100.

LSU received a score of 76.8 when extrapolated over the previous one hundred years, which placed it at No. 10 on the list. Ohio State was ranked No. 1 with an 86.4 rating. 1st place: Alabama (86.3) and No. 2 while Notre Dame’s 85.7 rating rounded out the top three. The rationale behind LSU’s spot among the top 10 on the 247Sports national team is as follows:

There’s a reason why LSU is considered one of the best jobs in the country: it is the only college football program whose last three head coaches won national titles. The Tigers won their first national championship in 1958, prior to their current two-decade run. This program is used to winning, and in Brian Kelly’s first fall as head coach, the Tigers won the SEC West and finished in the top 20 after Ed Orgeron left. Under the direction of Heisman winner Joe Burrow and a record number of NFL Draft picks, LSU won its most recent title in 2019.

Since the turn of the 21st century, LSU’s football program has experienced significant success. However, the Tigers have had a pretty remarkable 22 years, winning three national championships under different coaches and being widely regarded as one of the programs that produces the most NFL talent.

LSU has established itself as one of the nation’s best brands and programs over the past two decades. The Tigers have won 12 conference championships since the Southeastern Conference was founded in 1933, participated in nearly 30 New Year’s Six bowl games, won three BCS national championships, and won the College Football Playoff in 2019. They are widely considered to be one of the best college football teams of all time.

Billy Cannon, who would go on to win the Heisman Trophy, led the Tigers to a national championship in 1958, as well as some successful campaigns throughout the majority of the 1960s and the middle to late 1980s. LSU was respectable enough to have numerous seasons with nine or ten wins during that time, despite not returning to championship level until the turn of the century.

Because of the impact it has had on the sport over the past two decades and the tremendous growth that college football has experienced during that time, LSU is deserving of a spot in the top 10 for the past century.
