(WPBN/WGTU) — A school resource officer has been hired for East Jordan Public Schools, according to the East Jordan Police Department.
The police department announced in a press release that James Leroy Schlappi has been hired to fill the newly created position, and that his duties will begin on Monday, March 6.
Schlappi retired in 2020 after 27 years of service as a police officer for the City of Charlevoix.
While in Charlevoix, Schlappi functioned as a school asset official for a very long time and showed DARE and Group.
Schlappi worked as a deputy sheriff for the Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office after retiring, as well as as a probation officer for the 90th District Court.
The police department stated, “James will be serving the City of East Jordan and East Jordan Public Schools in all three campuses.” In addition to serving as a positive role model and mentor for the students, he will assist in ensuring the students’ and staff members’ safety.
The police department stated, “To help fund this position, the City of East Jordan obtained a grant from the United States Department of Justice and the East Jordan Public Schools obtained a grant from the Michigan State Police.”
